2 Major Redevelopment Projects Coming To Liverpool In 2021

Liverpool city centre looks set to be transformed this year, with two major projects already underway that will see The Strand and Lime Street redesigned, changing how people make their way around the metropolis.

According to the Liverpool Echo, The Strand – possibly the city’s most iconic route – is currently one of the busiest roads in Liverpool but work has now begun on a £22 million overhaul that will apparently make the waterfront more accessible for pedestrians.

A traffic lane in each direction will be removed and traffic junctions at Water Street and Mann Island with Goree set to be closed. A permanent segregated cycle lane will also connect the south of the city to to the north, so that cyclists will be able to ride straight from Otterspool to Southport.

As for Lime Street, which is famous for buildings like St George’s Hall and the Walker Art Gallery, work is now being done to turn it into a single carriageway in each direction to help improve access for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users.

A widened boulevard-esque pavement will also be installed that runs the length leading up to the Adelphi Hotel. Work began in October last year and is expected to be completed this autumn.

Other developments expected in the near future include Pall Mall, which will see more commercial space come to the city centre. The project will include 400,000sq/ft of office space, as well as a cafe, bar and restaurant.
